New Jersey’s unfunded pensions amount $171 billion according to state budget group. Neighboring states like Massachusetts in comparison are 73% funded pensions. Infrastructure costs in New Jersey exceed $45 billion with repairs and upgrades desperately needed according to officials. New Jersey needs to spend $45 billion over the next two decades to repair its drinking water and sewage treatment plants, according to environmental officials. That means investing $8 billion in its drinking water infrastructure and another $37 billion in wastewater treatment.
