Bizarre Foods Host Andrew Zimmern Dishes Out On Filipino Cuisine With Phil-am Food

NEW JERSEY, N.J. - Dec. 5, 2013 - PRLog -- This month, Jersey City’s Phil-Am Food was featured on the season premier of Bizarre Foods America’s 5^th season. Andrew Zimmern, James Beard Foundation Award Winner and host of Bizarre Foods America, traveled to the Filipino grocery store’s Newark Avenue location to sample some of the authentic Filipino eats offered that day.

Zimmern was welcomed by Erwin Santos and his family, who continue to run the grocery store that was originally started by Erwin’s parents back in the 70’s. What started out as a small Filipino grocery store has grown into the largest Filipino grocery store in the entire East Coast. The Filipino store is the lifeblood for much of New Jersey’s blossoming Filipino community, who regularly frequent the Phil-Am store for Filipino products ranging from tart calamansi juice to placenta soap. The Phil-Am Food store takes pride in its ability to offer all the comforts of the Philippines right from its New Jersey storefront.

In the episode, Zimmern tried a variety of Filipino delicacies from turon (a sweet snack filled with banana and jackfruit) to sizzling sisig (a flavorful savory dish built upon pork cheeks and belly). Not called a culinary adventurer for nothing, Zimmern also partook in the infamous Filipino dish balut—a fertilized duck egg in which the developed embryo is eaten whole. On Twitter, Zimmern raved about Phil-Am Food’s balut and thanked the Santos family for being gracious hosts.
