Naturetrek launches six new tours for 2014

Always on the look-out for new destinations and yet more of the world’s top wildlife experiences to offer its clients, Naturetrek has just added six new tours to its 2014 programme

Dec. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- Naturetrek, the UK’s leading wildlife tour operator, has extended its programme of expert-escorted trips to include six new holidays. The itineraries range from a fascinating eight-day trip in search of butterflies in Armenia’s spectacular Caucasian countryside to an exploration of Western Madagascar and its unique flora and fauna, including (hopefully) the chance to observe the enigmatic Fosa (a cat-like carnivorous mammal, native to Madagascar).

Three of the trips focus on seeking out a wonderful array of butterfly species, with 10% of the proceeds from each tour going to Butterfly Conservation.

New tours for 2014:

Western Madagascar

Baobabs, Forests & Fosas, 12 days

Unlike any other place on Earth, Madagascar should be at the top of any discerning nature lover’s wish list. This tour encapsulates the very best of its unusual wildlife and spectacular landscapes, with a foray into the little-known west coast of the island. There’ll be a drive through the impressive Avenue of Baobabs, and the trip is timed to coincide with the Fosa mating season. It’s likely you’ll see a whole host of captivating creatures, including the endangered Giant Jumping Rat, Malagasy Mongoose, Rhinoceros Chameleon and Lemur, including the Madame Berthe’s Mouse Lemur – the world’s smallest primate. Departs 8 November 2014 and costs from £4,695 pp (two sharing), including return flights (London), accommodation, all transport during the tour, all meals and expert guiding.

Ladakh

Birds & Mammals of the Tibetan Plateau, 15 days

An adventurous trip to the remote regions of the spectacular high-altitude Buddhist kingdom of Ladakh in north-west India, in search of the iconic mammals and birds of the Tibetan plateau. Wildlife highlights should include Marmot, Woolly Hare, Mountain Weasel and Shapu (wild sheep). Birders won’t be disappointed either: the group will seek out Ibisbill, Himalayan Griffon, Tibetan Snowfinch, Black-necked Crane and many more. Departs 18 July 2014 and costs from £2,895 pp (two sharing) including return flights (London), accommodation, all transport during the tour, most meals and expert guiding.

Armenia

Butterflies of the Caucasus, 8 days

This unusual offering encompasses the amazing variety of butterfly species that can be found in this culturally-rich, land-locked country. Explore mountainous terrain, flower-rich steppes, ancient forests and alpine meadows during the warm, dry summer in search of highly sought-after Caucasian butterflies as well as many European and Asiatic species. The trip begins and ends in the historic capital of Yerevan, and includes stays in small villages and rural towns for a taste of Armenian life and hospitality. Departs 21 June 2014 and costs from £1,795 pp (two sharing) including return flights (London), accommodation, all transport during the tour, all meals and expert guiding.

Spain

Spring Flowers of the Sierra de Guadarrama, 8 days

In the heart of the Iberian Peninsula lies the Sierra de Guadarrama, a majestic range of mountains where swathes of natural pine forest and grassy alpine meadows cover high peaks and provide the perfect environment for a wonderful range of wild flowers. This springtime trip seeks out fragrant crocus, narcissi and lavenders and is perfect for budding botanists. Mammals and birds are not overlooked either: Spanish Ibex, Iberian Wolf, Wild Boar and Booted Eagle all reside in the region. Departs 23 April 2014 and costs from £1,295 pp (two sharing) including return flights (London), all transport during the tour, all meals and expert guiding.

Sweden

Sweden’s Butterflies, 6 days

Head to Sweden during the height of summer for the chance to see an abundance of Scandinavian and Eastern European butterfly species. Based in Svartådalen, a serene patchwork of wetlands, mixed woodlands and flower-filled water meadows, highlights should include Clouded Apollo, Poplar Admiral and Scarce Copper. The area attracts all manner of birds too, from Spotted Crake to Thrush Nightingale and Common Rosefinch. Departs 25 June 2014 and costs from £1,450 pp (two sharing), return flights (London), all transport during the tour, all meals and expert guiding.

Switzerland
Butterflies of the Swiss Alps, 8 days

Based in the idyllic mountain village of Wengen, high in the Swiss Bernese Oberland, this single-centre itinerary offers a broad focus, seeking out butterflies, birds and other wildlife. Wengen is situated at an altitude of 1,163 metres and offers easy access to flower-rich meadows, pastures and spruce forests. Refreshingly, all transport is by train, cable car and on foot, and the group will explore a full range of altitudes in search of Golden Eagle, Black Woodpecker and Red Squirrel, and butterflies that include Glandon Blues and Small Apollos. Departs 29 June and costs from £1,695 pp (two sharing) including return flights (London), all transport during the tour, most meals and expert guiding.
