Discover the History of Forest Hill

Dec. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Releasing on January 20, 2014 is the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series entitled Forest Hill. This new pictorial historyfrom local authors Catharine Longendyck and Kathleen P. Galop boasts more than 200 vintage images depicting this signature neighborhood in Newark, N.J.

The book chronicles the history of Forest Hill which is located in the North Ward of Newark and overlooks the Passaic River to the east and Branch Brook Park to the west.  Vintage images depict this desirable residential area that is filled with large homes representing a variety of architectural styles, from Richardsonian Romanesque to Craftsman. Authors Longendyck and Galop illuminate the founding of this unique neighborhood and depict how the area was marketed to wealthy professionals in the mid-1800s and blossomed as a community.

The book also shows scenes that display the area’s modern identity, discussing the buildings on the National Register of Historic Places and other landmarks. Longendyck and Galop hope that Forest Hill will show the advantages of living in a cultural rich city neighborhood.  They stated, “Many of us appreciate the convenience of city living, with a short commute to business and easy access to cultural centers. We treasure our past and are willing to work at preserving it.”
