GHS supermarket tours earn national recognition

GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Jan. 13, 2014 - PRLog -- Georgetown, S.C. – GeorgetownHospital System’s (GHS) local supermarket tours have garnered some big national exposure for their impact on the surrounding community.

An article about the tours is included in an American Hospital Association publication that singles out hospital-based programs around the country for meeting their community’s social and basic needs, promoting community health, improving access and coverage and enhancing the quality of life of in their communities. Titled “Community Connections: Ideas and Innovations for Hospital Leaders,” the 36-page booklet is being mailed to every hospital CEO nationwide.

Crystal Cates, RD, LD, CDE, a Sodexo dietitian for GHS, said she and her team are honored and proud to have been selected for inclusion.

“Being featured is quite an honor and really elevates our program,” Cates said.  “As dietitians, we understand the importance of good nutrition for people of every age and recognize the challenges confronting people to put nutritious, budget-wise meals on the table. The tours are our way of serving the community and contributing to residents’ overall health.  They’re also an easy and fun way for the public to learn some key facts about nutrition.”

GHS/Sodexo dietitians lead free supermarket tours monthlyat local grocery stores in Garden City, Surfside, Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet and Georgetown. During the hour-long tours, participants learn how to read labels and ingredients, pick healthy snacks and shop on a budget and how marketing influences our food choices.

The next tour is set for Feb. 6 at the Murrells Inlet BI-LO, formerly the Piggly Wiggly, on Highway 17 South.
