Toyota Plans to Top U.S. Plans to Double Fuel Economy by 2025

Toyota believes it will surpass the new regulations requiring automakers to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy.

FOX LAKE, Ill. - Jan. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that they will top new US regulations intended to reduce carbon emissions and increase fuel efficiency. In 2011, automakers have agreed to a plan put in place by President Barack Obama called Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, that intends to increase the industry average to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. The Japanese automaker is the world’s largest seller of hybrid-electric vehicles, many of which can be found at Fox Lake Toyota in Fox Lake, Illinois.

According to Bob Carter, Toyota’s US senior vice president, the company is “in the pole position on CAFE,” in that it plans to surpass the new automotive standards, thanks in part to its “wide-ranging lineups and lead in hybrid vehicles.” Toyota said that there have been more than six million hybrid models delivered throughout the world since 1997, with 15 new or revamped hybrids released between August 2013 and 2015.

There have been a number of new hybrids, plug-ins, and electric models that have joined the car market in the last few years. In 2013, 578,000 automobiles that were powered by electricity, either fully or partially, were sold. That was an increase of 100,000 models from 2012, marking approximately 3.7% of all new vehicles sold in the US.

To be clear, the 54.5 miles per gallon CAFE goal isn’t the same equivalent as window sticker labels that show the actual fuel efficiency rating for specific vehicles. According to data from University of Michigan researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle, the window sticker average fuel economy showed an increase of 1 mpg last year reaching an all-time high of 24.8 mpg. In 2013, the U.S. CAFE average was 30 mpg, which was also the best ever.
