WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Jan. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- A cyborg computer hacker may be most people’s worst nightmare, but it was a dream come true for three cosmetology students when they captured 2nd place in the three-person team event at the student hair show at the Educational Forum in Fort Worth.

Cosmetology students Deborah Permar, Taylor Love and Charity Sanderson from ITS Academy of Beauty 3111 Midwestern Parkway in Sikes Mall in Wichita Falls used everything from a garbage can and a faux graffiti-laced brick wall to 1980s punk rocker-inspired hair and gritty theatre makeup to bring their computer-hacking model, Pearce Dunlap, to life.

“The students wanted to create something futuristic and edgy,” said Jayvon Mosby, the director of the Wichita Falls cosmetology school. “They invented a Mad Max-type villain hacking into an ATM machine and then tied it all together with anarchistic cosmetology images such as a B-52 bomber dropping combs instead of bombs and blow dryers pointed like pistols.   The school offered an advanced class in theater makeup and the students used many of the things they learned in the class to design something that was disturbing, yet thought provoking.”

There were three categories at the Educational Forum: a competition for a Bridal Mannequin, a Fantasy Mannequin, as well as a three-person team event. In the three person team competition students were told to pull out the stops and create an original, themed entry that incorporated hair and makeup that would wow the judges, spectators and fellow students. Each entry was judged based on creativity, originality, innovation, color and theme.
In order to pay for the props and the trip to the Educational Forum Mosby said the students did fundraising events and even set up a website where people could donate money and monitor the progress of the project.

“They were inventive in their designs and in their ingenuity to bring everything together to make it happen,” said Mosby. “We are very proud of all of them.”

ITS Academy of Beauty and its sister schools Olympian University, International Academy of Hair Design and Hair Benders Academy provides students with a distinguished environment that mirrors many of the upscale salons that will employ the cosmetology students after they graduate and earn their cosmetology license.

According to a U.S. News and World Report hairdresser is cited as one of the best jobs of 2012. In a March 21, 2012 article in USA Today, beauty salon sales grew 5.4 %.4 in the last two years vs. a 2.3% sales increase in 2009.  With the Bureau of Labor Statistics projections of 15.7% employment growth expected by 2020, the future of hair salons and the future of hair stylists should continue to grow.
