By: International Surf Lifesaving Association Semana Santa is a national holiday celebration and is traditionally associated with large crowds, large beach festivals and parties, and multiple drowning events. ISLA will be sending volunteers to both the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua to help prepare and serve during the holiday. Volunteers can choose to go to the Dominican Republic from April 9-21, where they will be placed in Cabarete, the north coast of the DR, and work with the Dominican Civil Defense and local businesses to conduct a variety of trainings and workshops as well as lifeguard Cabarete Semana Santa Beach Festival. Volunteers are also needed to go to Nicaragua from April 14-20 and will train and travel to various beaches around the country to lifeguard. They will work alongside the Nicaragua Red Cross on a volunteer lifeguard mission where both Nicaragua guards and ISLA guards will live, share, and learn lifesaving techniques together. Both projects are the continuation of lifesaving development in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The main goal is to send volunteers to provide aquatic safety operations for the holiday weekend.
