Hyundai Receives Driving Engagement Award for Walking Dead Chop Shop

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. - Feb. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- Many of the team members at Shaffer Hyundai, a Merrillville, Indiana car dealership that sells models like the 2014 Hyundai Genesis, are fans of the television show The Walking Dead on AMC. The characters are often behind the wheel of Hyundai cars and last year Hyundai released an integration called Hyundai’s Walking Dead Chop Shop. It was so popular, Hyundai has been awarded a Driving Engagement Award at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show.

Hyundai beat out popular campaigns from Jaguar and Honda to receive the award from the WOMMA, an automotive organization focused on social media and word-of-mouth advertising. They were very impressed with the Chop Shop citing its “creativity, originality, and execution.”

Using the Walking Dead Chop Shop website and app, fans of the show and Hyundai cars are given the opportunity to create their own car that can stand up to the zombie apocalypse. Users first start by selecting either the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Veloster Turbo, or an Hyundai Santa Fe.

From there, the user has over 300 different options to customize their vehicle. These options include weapons like chainsaws, armor reinforcement, and various survivalist enhancements. These were created in conjunction with Walking Dead comic book creator Robert Kirkman. Fans can then post their creations to friends on social media and put them through zombie survival scenarios ripped straight from the show.

Last year Hyundai held a contest for the best design. The winner was selected by Kirkman and Hyundai went as far as to turn it into a real car shown at New York’s Comic-Con. Hyundai also recently announced they would release a Walking Dead-inspired version of the Hyundai Tucson at dealerships like Shaffer Hyundai later this summer.
