Please join us on Saturday March 8, from 5, for the celebration and exhibition opening and to experience a different culture. Providing a critical history of Mithila Art and practice of this art on wall, floor in the epic of Ramayana through present-day practices on papers and canvases, Mithila Nepal chronicles the development of Mithila Art art over generations, presenting a rich and complex look at this important facet of art. The exhibition comprises 20 works by the artists, including video and photo documentation of performances, interactive works, and artworks created as a result of performance actions. Banarasi Pandit (born 1976) lives and works in Janakpur, Nepal. Her paintings are large-scale works on paper, bold tones of Acrylics that inhabit precise thin brush outline . On view will be works from her most recent series which takes as its subject matter action figures from the world of a Maithili woman. Pandit's works captures the moments of particular events. She draws the people performing rituals – the rites of marriage ceremony, tonsure ceremony, the sixth day of birth of a child etc as well as daily activities of Maithili people. She has been awarded several times in the local programs. Madan Kala Karn (born 1955) founded Janakpur Handicraft Center in 1994 to promote Mithila Art and women employment in the remote villages of southeast part of Nepal. Karn lives and works in Janakpur city of the country. She is one of the pre-eminent woman Artist working in Nepal today who is expert in using the combination of brush and pen in her arts and has developed her own very personalized and independent style in Mithila Art. Her canvases hover on the border between culture and freedom and explore expressionistic and women related issues. Her palette is reductive and refined, which brings a tribal affinity to her images. Rupa Kumari (born 1989) lives and works in Bihar, India. Like other Mithila Artists, Rupa also started doing this art in very young age without any professional training. Kumari likes to do Mithila art because it reminds her of her young age when her mother used to do these arts on floor and walls for rituals purposes. Her paintings are rendered in pen used on Khadi papers combining lives of people living in Mithila and expressing their cultural rituals which conflate tantric symbols, representations and implied meanings.
