In recent years, Asia has become an easy target for the unscrupulous psychometric test distributor. In other parts of the world there are recognized rules regarding the need for psychometric training and access to tests. For example, in South Africa, only registered psychologists may use psychometric tests. In the UK and much of Europe, most test publishers require the BPS Level 1 & 2 RQTU Certification or the Euro Test User Certificate in order to gain access to psychometric assessments of personality and ability. The training required in order to earn these certificates means that those using tests in these regions know about the pros and cons of various types of ability and personality tests and, what tests can and cannot do. This means that they can be more discerning about tests and choose the right test for the occasion with particular regard to the test's reliability and validity. In Asia, there are no psychometric test regulations at the current time. Often, those without a background in psychology or psychometrics sell psychometric tests. Worse still, sometimes those behind these businesses purposely mislead the Human Resource profession by stating on their "About us" page that they are a team of psychologists with membership of professional bodies and so on - but in reality they are not referring to their own business, rather a test publisher based overseas who they represent! Those intending to use tests decide which test to use on the basis of recommendations from untrained colleagues or from a free trial or the glossiness of the sales and marketing materials! None of these methods offer a true evaluation of the test. As a result of the above, poor hiring decisions are made, incorrect development advice is offered and both morale and reputations suffer.
