Chelmsford's Own Elizabeth Sperry Shares the Stage with Sir James Galway

CHELMSFORD, Mass. - March 4, 2014 - PRLog -- 17 year old Chelmsford native and Boston Flute Academy (BFA) Young Artist Elizabeth Sperry will perform on the same stage as the legendary flutist, Sir James Galway, during the opening concert of the BFA Galway Flute Weekend this Saturday March 8th, 2014.

Sperry has grown up in Chelmsford and is currently a senior at Chelmsford High School. Sperry has already given the community of Chelmsford many things to be proud of - she has spent many years performing with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, has placed in national competitions, and has been accepted (twice) into the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, a very selective national orchestra for exceptional teenagers.  As a member of the NYO-USA, Elizabeth Sperry toured Russia and the United Kingdom under conductor Valery Gergiev and soloist Joshua Bell.  In 2012, Sperry won third prize at the National Flute Association High School Soloist Competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Her  flute studies began with flute teacher Amanda Hughes right in Chelmsford.  As a 9th grader, Sperry was accepted to study flute with Judy Grant at the Boston Flute Academy where she continues to train as a BFA Young Artist.

At the Galway Flute Weekend, Sperry will perform some of the flute’s most demanding music alongside Galway, whose recordings and teachings have influenced more than one generation of flutists. Sperry states, “Before I started learning the flute, I heard James Galway playing on Sesame Street and Lord of the Rings. Even though I was very young and uninterested in classical music, his sound was so captivating that it inspired me to pick the flute to play in my fifth grade band.”

Elizabeth Sperry will perform as a soloist in the opening concert of the Galway Flute Weekend at the Maliotis Cultural Center in Brookline, on Saturday, March 8th, 2014 at 7:00 pm. She will also perform for Sir James Galway’s Masterclass on Sunday, March 9th from 11:00 - 11:45 am. Tickets for the Galway events are offered online for an advance concert pre-sale rate of $25, while seats last.
