The play is based on word for word excerpts of people Pinnock has interviewed in the USA and UK. In this workshop production, the play explores the definitions of beauty and the media’s perception on body image through a hilarious and poignant concoction of real life stories. Some of the people portrayed in the play include: renowned transgendered surgeon Dr. Marci Bowers; a Miss California pageant contestant and Chicago PD star LaRoyce Hawkins. The Body Image Project will be running April 18,19,24,25, and 26. Performances will be held at Gorilla Tango Theatre (Bucktown) 1919 North Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL, 60647. Creator of the El Stories series, Waltzing Mechanic’s Artistic Director, Thomas Murray, will direct this workshop. Plus size actor Danielle Pinnock, morphs into these real life stories with ease and challenges perceptions on what it means to beautiful. The play’s creator and star Danielle Pinnock says, “After two years of interviewing and writing this play I am so excited to get it in front of an audience to share these amazing stories.” Portions of the play have been performed Off-Broadway at the Soho Playhouse in June 2013 after a successful win in March at the NYC Strawberry Theatre Festival competition. Pinnock won “Best Actress” and the play garnered “Best Director” and “Best Play” nominations. Her mother and grandmother raised her. She went to Temple University for her undergraduate career and received a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Theatre with a concentration in Directing. While attending Temple University she was cast in a verbatim theatre play at 18 years old called In Conflict, and it changed her life. The show performed at the Long Wharf, Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, and received an incredible run Off-Broadway at the Barrow Street Theatre. Danielle found her passion and has just completed her Master’s in Acting from the Birmingham School of Acting in the United Kingdom, graduating with distinction honors.
