Follow on Google News | Agnes Davis Talks How To Read Food Labels & Get Empoweredswim swim swim I Say Encourages Students to Jump Into the Water
By: swim swim swim I Say http://www.youtube.com/ For the first time in two decades, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), is recommending changes to the nutritional labels on the back of our food. The FDA is hoping this change will add insight into how Americans consume food, and, educate them on the basic ingredients in foods. One fact is very clear — most consumers have no idea what they are looking for when reading a food label, or, what most of the ingredients listed really mean. Davis says, “Regardless of how much food you eat, don’t forget that exercise and eating go hand-in-hand. Changing the labels can empower folks to understand what their body needs, become an advocate for healthy eating while watching portion sizes and yes, jumping into the water for a total body workout. Agnes Davis jokes, “Swimming is a great exercise like no other that works many muscles in the body. But the key to really getting a great swim is to fuel your body with the correct foods. With the changes in the labeling of carbohydrate, this will help people make better choices of what to put in the body. But the most important change that food companies are fighting is how the sugar in your food will appear. Added sugar to food is great for a quick spike in energy but these are empty calories which will not fuel the swimming workout. Natural sugar from fruits and vegetables is the best fuel to have a energy consistent swim.” The mission of sssIS is to introduce healthy habits to students in and out of the water while encouraging changes to reduce diabetes, hypertension and drowning in African-American and Hispanic families. sssIS has been featured in the following media outlets: NBC Today Weekend, Jones Magazine, ABC-TV, DNAinfo, Amsterdam News, Black Enterprise, WBLSFM-Steve Harvey Morning, The Network Journal and Bronx Net. Davis’ company teaches instructional swimming to children and adults in her neighborhood of Harlem and at CUNY Hostos College. Agnes Davis’ Tips to Reading Food Labels: 1) Know your numbers: Calorie count will be more prominent in large bold type, which will remove all questions of how many calories per serving 2) Importance of vitamins: Vitamin D (Bone Health) and Potassium (Component in Blood Pressure) will now be listed. Vitamin A and C are now optional 3) Daily values: The percent of daily values will shift to the left so it will be easier to read. New information on sugar will be highlighted 4) Portion sizes: Understand the adjusted portion sizes/serving size as it relates to your body/health 5) Separation of sugar: The proposed change would separate sugars so you will know what sugar has been added to the food and what natural sugar is already in the food ### About Swim Swim Swim I Say: swim swim swim I SAY (http://www.swimswimswimisay.com) teaches tots, children and adults swimming and water safety.
