Love in an age of government surveillance: DIVIDED WE FALL

Journalist Adam Bender releases dystopian novel in style of Orwell, Bradbury

SYDNEY - May 12, 2014 - PRLog -- The war has come home. The mission has failed. But all Eve wants is to get Jon back.

Agent Eve Parker refuses to accept Jon’s change of heart when he loses his memory and becomes a revolutionary known as Seven. But when Eve learns more about the President’s plan to broaden citizen surveillance, she begins to question what she’s always believed to be right.

Divided We Fall, now available in major online bookstores, is a love story about surveillance. The new novel by award-winning tech journalist Adam Bender arrives at a time when social critics are   questioning the secret surveillance policies of governments around the world.

The novel has won early acclaim from Publishers Weekly after the manuscript was named a quarter-finalist in the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards. It was one of the top 100 novels selected in the sci-fi category.

“The novel raises interesting questions about the influence of propaganda on the construction of the self, the idea of true tabula rasa and the power of memory,” wrote Publishers Weekly, adding that “the central love story propels the narrative energetically.”

Author Adam Bender said he was inspired by current events and his own journalistic reporting on the conflict between privacy and national security policies.

Divided We Fall imagines a dystopian nation in which the government has used national security as an excuse to take all privacy rights from the people,” said Bender. “In the real world, things have not quite gone that far, but it is one possible outcome if the balance swings too far in one direction.”

“My new novel is a call for unity asking different sides of the surveillance issue to come together without arrogance and work on a solution that keeps citizens safe without deception and without infringement on personal privacy.”

Bender has written on the intersection of technology and politics for nearly a decade – he is currently a senior journalist for Computerworld and other IDG publications in Sydney, Australia. Previously, he covered the U.S. Congress and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for Communications Daily in Washington, D.C.

Divided We Fall is Bender’s second novel and continues the story begun in his acclaimed debut, We, The Watched.

“My two novels can be read in any order,” stressed Bender. “Newcomers can certainly jump on with Divided We Fall and then read We, The Watched later to get the hero’s origin story.”

The cover of Divided We Fall was designed by Belinda Pepper of Red Swallow Design. The novel was edited by Coraline Denhart and formatted for print and digital by Book Cover Café.

The novel will be sold online by Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, Kobo, Smashwords and a variety of other bookstores. The paperback is US$13.99 and the eBook is $3.99.
