Follow on Google News | Ziskinder’s Endorsements Top 200; Include Law Enforcement Officials, Business LeadersThis 19th circuit court candidate has collected more than 200 signed endorsements -- something of a feat since about half of them are from other lawyers, and the rules in Florida don't allow him to ask other lawyers to support him.
By: Steve Ziskinder, Candidate for Circuit Judge More than 200 people have now signed the form required by Florida’s election laws to authorize his campaign to publicize their support for his candidacy for circuit judge. The list covers a broad spectrum which includes attorneys, local law enforcement officials, physicians and business leaders from all four counties in the 19th Circuit. Posted on Ziskinder’s campaign website, ziskinderforjudge.com, the list is updated regularly. Political strategists consider endorsements more important in judicial races than in other contests because candidates for judicial office are not allowed to state their positions on issues or identify themselves by party, and voters therefore often make decisions based on who supports a candidate. In several large counties in Florida, local bar associations give voters a degree of guidance with a “bar poll,” in which judges and judicial candidates are rated by their fellow attorneys, but no such survey is done in the 19th Circuit, which covers Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. “It is more than gratifying to receive the level of support that we have,” said Ziskinder, “especially because not only did every one of those people take the time to complete and sign a form, but other people had to ask about half of them on my behalf to do so." Judicial candidates are not allowed to ask other attorneys for endorsements, and roughly half of Ziskinder’s endorsements come from attorneys. Ziskinder is running for the Group 4 seat being vacated by Judge Dwight Geiger, who retires at the end of this year. He began his career as a state prosecutor in St. Lucie County in 1988, and has been in private practice as a trial lawyer since 1991. He is the owner of The Boston House, a historic national landmark building next to the St. Lucie County Courthouse, where his office is located. He is married to attorney Melinda Plummer Ziskinder. They have three sons and live in Palm City. The primary election will be held on August 26th. End
