Whales choose Drake Bay, and so should you!

DRAKE BAY, Costa Rica - June 4, 2014 - PRLog -- The humpback whale has been known to travel over 8,300 kilometres to breed. Humpbacks have been found on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica that swim all the way from the Antarctic, the longest migration ever documented.

Luckily, you don’t have to swim thousands of miles to experience these giant and ancient creatures. Costa Rica has the longest season for whale watching in the world and the best place to see them is Drake Bay. Between August and September, Drake Bay is host to a mysterious and wonderful event; whales come to the bay to birth their calves.

The most common species here are humpback whales, which can grow to over 40ft and are famous for their long and complicated songs. Scientists think that whales choose Drake Bay because the water is calm and the perfect temperature for nursing their young.

Humpbacks are not the only wildlife you may see here. Drake Bay, on the Osa Peninsula, has one of the highest concentrations of animals on Earth. There are two famous draw-cards.

Corcovado National Park is a remote area of primary jungle which is home to a menagerie of endangered species. Even on a half day walk you may encounter the strangely elephant-like Tapir, herds of white-lipped peccary, shy toucans and the bold Scarlet Macaw.

Caño Island Biological Marine Reserve, a beautiful boat ride away from Drake Bay’s main town of Agujitas, is popular with snorkelers and divers wanting to experience the interactive aquarium of manta rays, sea turtles, and sharks.
