SHATIN, Hong Kong - June 12, 2014 - PRLog -- Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) successfully performed a live demonstration showcasing the x86 based single box LTE core network at Mobile Asia Expo 2014 being held in Shanghai, China from 11 to 13 June. This cost effective, high performance, all-in-one core network gear provides an ideal solution for small and medium sized LTE network deployments.

The end-to-end small cell network consists of TD-LTE and FDD-LTE small cells and an x86 based single box Evolved Packet Core (EPC), which consolidates mobility management entity, serving gateway, packet data network gateway and home subscriber service. The EPC software runs on an off-the-shelf Intel server and delivers over 10Gbps throughput providing significant cost savings for LTE network deployments, especially for private ones.

ASTRI has been developing and providing LTE gateway software, including EPC, small cell gateway and Internet Protocol (IP) security gateway, and advanced IP protocol stacks (FastGate) since 2008.  Providing x86 based EPC is the first step towards Network Function Virtualization to deliver a highly flexible software solution to LTE equipment vendors.
