SANTA FE, N.M. - June 16, 2014 - PRLog -- The Asia Institute announced today that it has been named the 2014 Innovative New Program – Study Abroad Award winner as determined by a committee of international education professionals known as the GoAbroad Innovations Academy.

The 2014 Innovative New Program – Study Abroad Award was presented by GoAbroad during the NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego, CA. As the leading resource for meaningful travel, GoAbroad selects the award winners in coordination with a prestigious and selective group of international educators. The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge institutions, organizations, and individuals who are creating initiatives to move the field of international education forward, and to commend leaders in the community for their efforts to go beyond the conventional.

Cleveland State University in collaboration with host partner the Asia Institute were nominated for their innovative program design connecting academic course content and real world learning outcomes. For the first time ever, students on a ten day international study program tracked an end-to-end supply chain. The “Follow the Smart Phone Trail” program offers students a faculty-led experience in Shanghai, Suzhou, and Shenzhen, China and Hong Kong SAR, incorporating visits to leading companies that are redefining the smart phone industry, such as Apple Retail (consumer experience), ZTE and Huawei (OEM/ODM), Knowles and TE Connectivity (component manufacturers) and including the Yangshan Deep-Water Port (import/export).

Upon receipt of the award, Bradley A Feuling, Chairman, the Asia Institute, stated, “The Asia Institute is truly honored to have developed this program with Cleveland State University, and in particular Dr. Oya Tukel, Chair and Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management at the Monte Ahuja College of Business. This program is very unique and we are proud to have helped build the first end-to-end supply chain experience for students. Thank you to the judges for their recognition, and to the many people involved in creating this award winning program.”

Over the past seven years, the Asia Institute has quickly grown to become a leading host partner for many educational institutions developing short term customized faculty-led programs in Asia. In 2014, the Asia Institute announced the launch of the Supply Chain Series, where students can follow the end-to-end supply chain in the electronics, medical/healthcare and retail/fashion industries.
