Las Vegas Constable's Office Raided. Criminal Wiretapping Going On?

Constable John Bonaventure in the middle of an investigation by Las Vegas Police Criminal Intelligence Section

LAS VEGAS - June 19, 2014 - PRLog -- Earlier this week, warrants were executed at the Constable's Office in response to what might amount to criminal wiretapping.  In Nevada, it is illegal to record phone conversations unless all parties give their expressed consent.

This investigation appears to be in response to a Las Vegas Review Journal story from May earlier this year where a Clark County Commissioner, Tom Collins reported that he never gave his permission to record a phone call with Constable John Bonaventura.  In the recording, Bonaventura is displaying animosity toward officials who earlier supported the abolishing of the Constable's Office in 2013.  The County in fact ruled to eliminate the office.

Despite Bonaventura filing an appeal in Las Vegas District Court, to overturn the ruling, the District Judge denied that appeal.

In Nevada, someone can be facing a prison sentence of more than 1 year if convicted of this type of crime.  As of Wednesday this week, the Constable's Office is back running normally despite having electronic equipment confiscated for the investigation.  No arrests were made.  However, the office has its days numbered anyhow.
