Division 7 Waterproofing Consultants Opens Facility to Train Contractors to Install Roof Decks

California Based Construction Training School Teaches How to Install Roof Deck Coatings Stressing Utilization of Best Practice Construction Methods in Roof Deck Waterproofing

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - July 14, 2014 - PRLog -- Bill Leys, a nationally recognized expert in roof deck waterproofing, has opened a very unique training facility in Arroyo Grande CA that teaches current and potential applicators, contractors and builders how to install pedestrian friendly walkable roof deck systems. Leys, known as "The Deck Expert", saw a need to provide a niche market with trained applicators.  With roof decks and balconies becoming a near standard feature on condo's and homes, the demand for trained applicators has risen tremendously.

Division Seven Waterproofing Consultants saw a need for filling the demand for trained applicators in the art of installing roof deck systems. "Most "trained applicators" learn their trade from someone already in the trade. The problem is, many have learned their craft poorly from teachers who were taught incorrectly." says Leys.

"Almost every time we are asked to inspect a roof deck because it leaks or is suspected of leaking, we discover that the applicator did a poor job installing the system because of a failure to follow the required details necessary to achieve a leak free assembly. Combined with poor construction of the decks framing and substrate, it is a lethal combination. Our goal is to educate applicators to inspect the deck before waterproofing to ensure the deck is built correctly and to properly execute the details necessary to install the decking system so both will have an approximate 25-30 year life span. With training schools like this, we also hope to slow down the number of construction defect suits that target leaking waterproof decks on mass produced housing." says Leys.

Division 7 Waterproofing Consultants offers in house training at their facility in the town of Arroyo Grande CA, a small town near San Luis Obispo. The school also offers training to companies employees at their own location throughout California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. Monthly training sessions are scheduled for the first Friday of every month at the facility and on site training sessions are available any day of the week.

All training sessions focus on the basics of deck waterproofing skills, including inspecting the deck before the job begins to determine a basic scope of work it will need, code requirements for deck building and waterproofing, basic flashing techniques to install flashings at the deck to walls, edges and door openings. Installation procedures for the installation of metal lath and concrete based systems from Life Deck, Pli-Dek, Enduro-Kote, Desert Brand, Westcoat, Mer-Kote, Miracote and other manufacturer's are taught based on specific manufacturer requirements.

Our method of teaching is simple, instructors show students how to perform each step of the process, then each student performs the same task on a 4' x 8' mock up deck under the eye of the instructors. Each student will, by the end of the training session, have installed a deck system from A-Z. Students can bring their deck sample back to their business to use as a demo/sample to show their potential clients. (Bring a truck)

Classes in 2014 are scheduled and signups have started for the schools August 1st and September 5th classes. The October and November classes will be available to sign up for starting in August. There will be no classes scheduled for the December/January holiday period, training will resume in 2015 in February. Each training session is apx 8 hours of class time and actual field time.
