The town was founded in 1880. Thanks to a very diligent group of people many of the city’s historical buildings have been restored to their former glory. In today's post, the Salida Colorado Gazette showcased some of the history in the little town. It also mentioned a non-profit organization called historic Salida Inc. You could say they are part of the reason the city was able to get back on its feet after the devastating blow to their economy back in the 1970’s. From 1880 to 1970 Salida was a mining town and a stagecoach stop for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. http://salidacoloradogazette.com/ When the railway left the towns economy collapsed. In 1970 until the mid 1990’s Salida would remain in a very depressed state. Lots of people moved out of the town and many of the buildings were going to rack and ruin. In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s things began to turn around. Some very smart people began to see the wisdom in restoring historical buildings and bringing tourists into the town. Over the next decade many groups would work together to clean up the town, renovate buildings, reinstate hiking tracks and biking trails, encourage community involvement and focus on all of the incredible things the town had to offer. It is clear that they have achieved their goal. Anyone who ever visits Salida, Colorado says it was an experience like no other.
