U.S. Congress American Jazz Legend Recipient - Sarah McLawler - Celebrates Her 88th Birthday in NYC

NEW YORK - Aug. 4, 2014 - PRLog -- Sarah McLawler: The "Empress of Jazz” in her wide-ranging career, has worked with Dinah Washington, George Benson, Pearl Bailey, Max Roach, Nat King Cole, Art Tatum, Dionne Warwick, Gloria Lynn, Milt Jackson, Errol Garner, Abbey Lincoln, her late husband violinist Richard Otto, Eddie Durham, Wynton Marsalis - and mentored Quincy Jones!  Born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Chicago, she studied organ at an Indiana Conservatory and attended Fisk University. Influenced heavily by the music of the big bands, McLawler used to sneak into clubs in Indianapolis to hear Lucky Millinder. She went on the road with the bandleader, but later formed her own all-girls band.

Based in Harlem, she occasionally performs in Atlantic City, NJ, but on most Saturday's Sarah ‘brings it on home to you’ at the elegant, legendary French Restaurant CHEZ JOSEPHINE, run by the son of Josephine Baker... where the likes of Wynton Marsalis and James Carter come by and sit in.
