ATLANTA - Aug. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- ATLANTA – The Awesome Foundation’s Atlanta Chapter has awarded a $1000 grant to The Learning Garden to provide students with hands-on nutrition and science education opportunities.  The project is a collective effort between several community and civic partners including The Ryan Cameron Foundation.  The Learning Garden’s goal is to create an easy, affordable, scalable school garden solution for fresh vegetables and fruits grown by local middle school children to connect the dots of how to make better food choices. The program will also host educational workshops to teach students, teachers and parents the benefits of fresh foods, harvesting crops and planting small gardens.

Each month the Awesome Foundation distributes a $1,000 grant to projects and their creators. Awesome Atlanta Founder Dr. Dionne Mahaffey stated the group was excited to support such a great community-focused project that really aimed to empower the local community and get them excited about nutrition.

“As an Atlanta native I know the importance of knowledge and exposure.  With the current food desert issues in our urban communities this learning garden will teach and nourish simultaneously," said Ryan Cameron, founder of the Ryan Cameron Foundation.

The program will begin on Monday, September 1, with weeding, pruning and planting gardens. The curriculum module will include an on-site program with a “hands on” learning environment, studying plant life cycles, and environmental science.

The Awesome Foundation will host their monthly Awesome Hour on Wednesday, August 20 at 7:00 pm at Fork and Juniper located inside of the Hyatt Midtown where The Learning Garden will be recognized and given the $1,000 grant to continue their cause. Individuals and groups interested in applying for an Awesome Grant in the future, are encouraged to come out and meet the group’s trustees.

“This project is perfectly aligned to the mission of The Awesome Foundation. Our trustees are honored to lend assistance to this endeavor,” said Dr. Mahaffey.

“Awesome Atlanta was established to mine the brilliance of our city's philanthropists, artists, inventors, designers, leaders, creators, champions, and dreamers and fund projects that have both local impact and global resonance. We believe that Atlanta, with all of the resources and amenities that drive us to the top of most of the "Best City..." lists, can bring more awesomeness to the global community. Thus, we are poised to give $1000 each month to the people who show us the best ways to do that,” Dr. Mahaffey concluded.
