CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Aug. 13, 2014 - PRLog -- There is nothing quite like a wonderful evening filled with friends, family, movies, and Chinese take out food. Everybody gets super excited after a hard days work when that knock finally comes at the door and all those cool little white Chinese take out boxes are handed to you with wonderful smells coming from them. However, what I bet you didn’t know is those white boxes were originally called “Oyster Pails”.

That’s right! Oyster Pails were first developed in 1894 when oysters were very popular to eat in the United States. However, as time progressed, people began to notice that oyster pails could hold liquid very well and would not leak all over the place. As such, in the early 20th century, oyster pails became popular to store and transport honey. However, the oyster pail would not become widely used until after World War II.

The reason for this was after World War II, pre-made food started becoming popular in the United States and Western Europe. People began to become very fond of Chinese food for its unique, yet charming taste, along with the fact that was an inexpensive meal. As Chinese food started to become more popular in the United States, Chinese store owners starting using the oyster pail to deliver their food to peoples houses because it would help the food retain its warmth and flavor for extended periods of time.

Not only that, but Chinese food owners liked the box because it was able to properly vent food to keep it from becoming stale or soggy. And because the oyster pail was able to keep liquids from leaking out of the box, it became very useful to transport many different Chinese food types that had “soup” like qualities to them. Around the time of the 1960’s, eventually oyster pails became so prevalent in the Chinese food industry that they became known simply as “Chinese take out boxes”.

Surprising to most people, Chinese take out boxes are almost never used in China. They are a very American and Western European box that originally was intended for oysters and honey in the late 19th century, and only in recent history were adopted to be used as boxes to transport Chinese Food. So the modern name of “Chinese Take Out Box” has almost nothing to do with the origin of the box, as more as it has to do with the industry that utilizes it the most often.
