Gray said that standard towing guides are not enough to ensure that prospective tow vehicles and recreation vehicles are compatible for towing. This is especially true concerning the truck for a fifth wheel or gooseneck trailer towing combination because of the need to account for the rear gross axle weight rating.

“Some trucks may have a high gross combined weight rating and maximum trailer weight but the pin weight of some fifth wheel or gooseneck trailers may exceed the tow vehicle’s rear gross axle weight rating,” Gray explained. “Some dealers, unbeknownst to them, may have mistakenly matched the wrong RV and tow vehicle. Gray said the latest BYBRV app revision provides an all new appearance and an additional calculation for fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers. The new calculation output reveals the national pin weight average of 20 percent for these trailers. He said that the original 25 percent pin weight margin is still the safest margin when selecting a new vehicle, and the 20 percent margin is provided to help a buyer to narrow down a potential purchase without risking too much safety.
