By: La Starza Wellness The prostate is a small gland in men that is part of the reproductive system. It is 30% muscular tissue and 70% glandular tissue. It's about the shape and size of a walnut. The prostate sits below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It helps to control the flow of urine. It surrounds part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. The prostate helps make semen, which carries sperm from the testicles when a man ejaculates Most men will develop some type of prostate problem in their lifetime. As a man ages, the prostate can grow larger. Since it surrounds part of the urethra, an enlarged prostate gland can put pressure on the urethra which causes problems of the passing urine. An enlarged prostate is also called benign (non cancerous) prostatic hyperplasia of BPH. 8 out of 10 men eventually develop an enlarged prostate. Symptoms of an enlarged prostate may include trouble trying to start or stop urinating, feeling like your bladder is not empty, or a sudden urge to urinate. It is important to realize that if you have symptoms of BPH you should see your doctor. BPH is progressive and can lead to serious health problems such as bladder or kidney damage. Limiting drinking at night, especially not drinking alcohol or caffeine will help if you have BPH. There are different drugs to treat BPH, although the FDA has revised some of their labels stating that these drugs have an increase link to prostate cancer. Surgery is always the last resort if all other forms of treatment have been tried. End
