Investigating Multiple Homicide House Fires Workshop - 26 November 2014

AYLESBURY, U.K. - Sept. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- This one day workshop will feature two recent investigations that were both unique and challenging because of the unusual circumstances of both cases.

The theme of the day will be to look at the challenges and best practice
associated with multiple homicide house fires and to provide investigators of all
ranks with tips, techniques and current thinking around this area of major crime.

It will be led by Detective Chief Supt Andy Hough, Detective Supt Kate
Maynell and DCI Simon Shuttleworth who head up the East Midlands Special Operations Unit – a collaboration between Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire police forces.

Our speakers will give an overview of both cases and then focus specifically in
more detail about the different aspects of the case including the witness strategy, forensics strategy, FLO issues and the interview and arrest strategies.

They will focus on the following two case studies that made the national and
international news because of their unique nature. Both investigations
ended in convictions and resulted in considerable lessons to be learned that the
team would like to pass onto other investigators.


Case studies featured will be:
Operation Morgan: the Derby house fire where Mick Philpott was convicted for
the part he played in the incident which resulted in the death of his six children
who lost their lives in the fire in May 2012

This multi-faceted investigation was one of the winners of The Investigator’s
Excellence in Investigation Awards and contains a wealth of best practice and
lessons learned that will prove valuable to all investigators.

Key successes including the setting up of a multi-agency Strategic Co-ordination Group and enlisting experts to establish the brand of the petrol used in the fire which provided central to the outcome of the case.

Operation Rubytail: this case is one of the most extraordinary and unique cases in recent years. It involved a botched revenge arson attack on a house in Wood Hill in Leicester in September last year.

Mother Shehnila Taufiq, 46, and her three children lost their lives in the fire after
the gang mistakenly set the house alight. The gang were jailed for a total of 134
years in June this year. Due to the unusual circumstances of the case – it tested the investigation team to the limit and resulted in a number of best practice points that will be shared with delegates at the conference.
