Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth to Speak About “Grit” at Adelphi University

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Sept. 25, 2014 - PRLog -- GARDEN CITY, NY, September 2014—Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth, associate professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, will give a lecture entitled “True Grit” at Adelphi University on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center. Dr. Duckworth will be speaking on her research involving “grit,” a success indicator that goes beyond IQ score and social intelligence and instead measures work ethic, passion, and perseverance. This lecture, sponsored by the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies and the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, is free and open to the public.

Dr. Duckworth’s research began when she left a high-paying consulting job to teach seventh-grade math in New York City Public Schools. As a teacher, she noticed that her students with the highest IQ scores did not necessarily perform the best in class. She then pursued her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and began extensive research among various people and settings. Dr. Duckworth has worked with West Point cadets, inner city teachers, corporate salespeople, and scores of others, all the while asking the same question: “Which of these people will be successful, and why?”

Dr. Duckworth runs a large research lab at the University of Pennsylvania and has published numerous articles on her research. She has spoken at a TED Education conference and is also a recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant.
