By: Hong Kong Maritime Museum More than 90% of global trade is carried by sea, without shipping the modern world would effectively cease to function. Everything from our hats to our shoes, to our fridges and furniture, let alone the coal that burns to give us power and the oil that is consumed in engines and factories, cars and planes have arrived at our homes as a direct result of the ships that transported them. Far too often, shipping is referred to as a ‘hidden’ industry. Few outside it realise its importance. In the last fifty years the shipping industry and its activities have, in many parts of the world, been overshadowed in the public’s perception with the rise of the aviation and automobile industries. Although many ports have moved out of city centres, making them less visible to the public and people can now easily travel quickly across the world by air, shipping has always provided the only cost effective method of bulk transport over any great distance. The volume of trade carried by ships has grown and advances in technology have made shipping an increasingly efficient and swift method of transport. Please come along with your friends and family to find out more about Hong Kong’s vibrant shipping industry, speak to professionals about the exciting career opportunities in the maritime industries and find out how changes in modern shipping are affecting you! Activities during Maritime Awareness Week 2014 will include visits to a boat and a life raft, maritime information stands, presentations from industry professionals, careers advice and, of course, the chance to explore and experience the Hong Kong Maritime Museum.
