Presenters are faculty, industry practitioners and research fellows associated with CIMS, a research center based in the NC State Poole College of Management. Authors of the forthcoming book, “Traversing the Valley of Death: A Practical Guide for Corporate Innovation Leaders,” will provide an overview of the book, which includes a system and processes that managers at established companies can use to generate growth from disruptive innovation in products and services. The authors are Steven Markham, professor in Poole College’s Department of Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Paul Mugge, director of CIMS and former IBM executive. Markham’s research has focused on the systems of processes high-tech companies use to foster and manage innovation, technology commercialization and the front end of innovation. For more than a decade, he has been teaching graduate management students and executives to apply processes that lead to breakthrough innovation by successfully navigating the Valley of Death. Also on the agenda - Case study presentations by Ramesh Ratan, chief executive officer of Bell and Howell who has applied techniques from the book, and Rolf Kleiner, CIMS Industrial Fellow and chief innovation officer at Kelly Services - Presentation by Markham and Tim Michaelis, a doctoral student at NC State University, and Hyun-Jung Lee, assistant professor of employment relations and organizational behavior, London School of Economics, on championing charismatic leaders. - Presentation by Chad Morris, a CIMS data scientist, on how a data savvy manager can impact strategic decision making, along with an overview of new tools for visualizing data. - Poster gallery summarizing graduate student projects in innovation management Prices for this meeting vary, based on the sessions attended.
