Follow on Google News | Anne-Marie McDermott Headlines Special Friends & Family ConcertMaestro Ted Sperling Leads and Explains Mozart Magic Flute, Greig Piano Concerto, Beethoven Symphony No. 2 *Young people under 17 admitted free with paid adult ticket.*
“It isn’t a children’s concert, it’s a full-fledged symphonic program,” noted Executive & Artistic Director Joshua Worby. “The difference is that Maestro Sperling will provide some insights and listening keys before each work, to help educate all listeners and especially to open the ears and minds of young people.” Opening with Mozart’s mischievous Overture to The Magic Flute, a whirlwind scene is set for the magnificent Grieg Piano Concerto. Anne-Marie McDermott, recently invited by none other than the Grieg Festival Orchestra to play this very work, and hailed by The New York Times as “a pianist who balances qualities of excitement and spontaneity with clarity and elegance,” takes on its opening passage that is among the most famous in history. Following intermission, the sense of optimism and boundless possibility in Beethoven’s Second Symphony belies what the composer had just learned from doctors, that his encroaching deafness would not be cured. Before the concert children are invited to get up close and personal with the instruments at a free instrument “Petting Zoo”. Teaching artists from the Philharmonic will be on hand in the lobby to guide young listeners as they explore violins, trumpets, drums and more. February 8 concert tickets for young people 17 and under are free with a paid adult ticket.
