ENGLEWOOD, N.J. - Jan. 21, 2015 - PRLog -- With an increase in scientific breakthroughs and more being understood about the physiology of skin every day, skincare experts are coming closer than ever to learning how to slow down—and even, reverse—the aging process. Here is a nutritional guide to healthy and beautiful skin that should be part of everyone’s daily skincare regimen.

FUNDAMENTAL INGREDIENTS – MUST HAVE

Sunscreen

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: sunscreen is the most effective weapon in protecting your skin and should be used daily. Sunscreen agents scatter, reflect, block, or absorb UV radiation before it causes skin damage. However, no sunscreen is 100% effective— minimizing risks associated with environmental offenses, such as IR radiation, ozone, air pollution and cigarette smoke is also important.

Antioxidants

A number of powerful antioxidants, including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Green Tea and Resveratrol, have proven effective in combating age-inducing free radicals before they can do damage to skin cells.

Like sunscreen, antioxidants are not a 100% sure thing, as some free radicals can form toxic cross-links that prevent DNA from replicating normally. Fortunately, DNA repair enzymes—natural “repair mechanisms” in skin that maintain DNA in its healthy, unaltered state—can assist in undoing the damage. They’re a cell’s final defense and are critical to achieving healthy skin.

TRANSFORMING INGREDIENTS – NEED TO HAVE

Retinoids

Retinoids are a derivative of Vitamin A that improve cell turnover and enhance optimal cell metabolism. That’s important in helping minimize the appearance of fine lines, improving skin thickness and elasticity, lightening brown spots, and improving collagen retention. Quite simply, retinoids are one of the key ingredients that truly work as an age-reversing agent at the cellular level.

Alpha Hydroxyl Acids

Also known as AHA, these powerful acids are essential to increasing cell turnover and boosting the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture. The exfoliating effects of AHA include smoother skin and a decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by exfoliating the top layer of your skin. This improves cell turnover and increases water retention, plumping the skin from inside out. The result is a radiant, more youthful glow.

OPTIMIZING INGREDIENTS – NICE TO HAVE

Skincare products containing peptides and growth factors are great addition to your skin care “diet”. Peptides help your body’s cells communicate with one another to ensure maximum production of essential proteins, which are imperative to skin regeneration. Especially important for healing skin wounds (so long, scars!)

Growth factors are usually proteins or steroid hormones that act as cell-signaling agents, inducing cellular metabolic activity. There are many different types of growth factors, each specific to different types of cells: skin, nerve, fibroblasts, vessel, etc. Adding these growth factors to skincare products can significantly improve its ability to fight the signs of aging.
