Follow on Google News | Tea and twaddle? What a load of poppycock!Meet the ladies of the Totnes WI Debating Club. They are a positive forward thinking force to reckoned with.
By: WI Totnes, South Devon. The women in the WI society continue to adhere to the traditions set out over 100 years ago whilst they aim to push boundaries and try new things so to appeal to a wide demographic in local communities. The history of all that is great about the WI was at the heart of the matter when the Totnes WI debating club met at the Seven Stars Hotel on Tuesday 20th January 2015. The meeting was far from just ‘tea and twaddle’! The group of 12 women had a lively debate as follows: This house believes that the WI as a movement needs to be redefined. WI member Jacki passionately gave a compelling argument for change so that the WI could remain relevant in our ever changing world and local communities. WI member Ann eloquently defended the fact that the movement, which is now in its centenary year, was a well respected and a focused organisation which is also at the heart of the British nation and should therefore continue following and adhering to traditions. The result of the debate? Well firstly let’s just say, it was agreed by all present that the wisdom, knowledge and the support the WI gives communities across the globe is unequalled and their beliefs, aims and objectives which are handed down from generation to generation of women should remain. However!!!! The group made a point of saying, women are catalysts for change and therefore maybe just maybe a few new resolutions could be added to the constitution. For example the inclusive of resolutions which will embrace new ideas and ensure the society is wholly and fully inclusive of all demographics within local communities. The days of old with jam and Jerusalem are still there, after all the traditions are steadfast and bedrocks for the WI, but it was acknowledged by the debating club that a younger crowd are keen to get involved with local communities and projects. With the WI being highlighted on the big and small screen and in theatres in the past few years, women across the UK are curious and keen to find out what the ladies are up to and they should all be welcomed. In essence, in today’s global village both the older and younger generations have worthy skills to share that are beneficial to all members of a community. Why not join all the ladies of the Totnes WI in February at the monthly meeting to find out who they are, what they do and how to become involved in debating, walking, crafting, drama, charity work etc.... the list is endless! The next WI meeting is at the Totnes Boating Association on Thursday 19th February at 7.30pm. The subject of Dr Ian Hodgins the speaker is "Quacks, Whores, and Pestilence" and is about Victorian Public Health in Plymouth.
