By: Evolution Grappling Academy In total Evolution Grappling Academy made the 50 mile trek east, with six of it's grapplers. Ranging in a variety of weight classes and skill levels, all the competitors from the Beacon Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school had fantastic performances. Representing Evolution Grappling Academy in the Master( over 30 yrs old) divisions would be Michael Wynne of Stormville, and Kevin Pelepako of Hopewell Jct. Mike W. would go on to place second in his division. At 46 years of age, Mike displayed a true show of heart in his purple belt match up. The full-time father of two would go on to earn the Silver Medal. Kevin Pelepako was the Ultra Heavyweight representative for EGA. The multiple time Pan-Am champion took home the Gold Medal in his division. With a well calculated game plan, Kevin would win in the finals, outpointing his opponent. Brian Boersma, a very talented grappler who gathered years of experience on the mat at John Jay High school displayed nothing short of a spectacular performance. Brian's journey of grappling, began at 4 years of age and his talents would find him on the varsity wrestling team for John Jay at the age of 12. Boersma competed in the Purple belt Gi divison, his first time at this advanced level. Brian would have 4 fights 3 ending in submission including the Gold medal match-up. Two of the "Young Bucks" of the former Fishkill Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school, Nick Spencer and Cristian "Cub" Wassweiler also had outstanding perfomances. Nick is a 21 year Muay Thai fighter from New Winsdor, NY. In his first competition as a grappler he would very graciously go on to earn the bronze medal in his division. Nick is a talented, young fighter, who is a few weeks out from entering bootcamp for the US Army. Cristian Wassweiler is somewhat of a Jiu Jitsu prodigy. Dubbed "Cub" by his training partners for his playful yet very effective grappling style. He's eerily similar to a lion cub unaware of it's strength. The baby-faced 20 year old has been training BJJ for less then a year and has racked up Gold Medals in Multiple tournaments. Breezing through his divison, submission after submission he would ultimately go on earn the Bronze Medal after he was disqualified for dropping his opponent accidently, eliminating him from the Gold medal match-up. The Chief Instructor of the EGA Tribe, Mike Palladino would go on to represent the Beacon Martial Arts School in the Expert Divison. The welterweight, took home the title belt after battling some very game adversaries. More prestigous than his performance, was the performance of his pupils. A very dedicated and passionate instructor, the most meaningful award was the success of his comrades and students. Assisting in the coaching duties were Evolution Grappling Academy purple belt Al Gernhardt and Jamie Jimison. Coaching can be strenuous, especially with multiple teammates competing at the same time in different rings. Thank you to our coaching staff. An overall, very successful outing by the tribe of grapplers representing Beacon Jiu Jitsu. EGA provides families with Martial Arts instruction and physical activities, for children and parents.
