The Telegraph Hill Gallery features Sergio Lobato

“Raw Response” Inspirations from the Abattoir - oil paintings by Sergio Lobato

SAN FRANCISCO - Feb. 14, 2015 - PRLog -- SAN FRANCISCO, CA  - The Telegraph Hill Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “Raw Response” an exhibition of recent work by San Francisco Bay Area artist Sergio Lobato with a reception on February 20, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. The exhibition will run from February 17 through March 13, 2015. The show will feature oil paintings of animal flesh with references to works ranging from the 16th century to the contemporary period.

Lobato brings raw flesh to the forefront in this body of work. He describes the themes of his work as unconventional but with strong links to traditional still life. The paintings of raw meats with its fat, tendons, and slimy textured appearance elicit a strong response either of repulsion or of seduction. Lobato aspires that after the initial shock the viewer will be drawn to the distinction between the objects in the painting and the subject matter of the painting.

Diego Velasquez and Francisco Goya are major influences that emerge in Lobato’s figurative work. Inspirations from works by Chaim Soutine, Francis Bacon, and contemporary painter Jenny Saville also pervade in Lobato’s paintings.
