By: CHOKI “We are thrilled to partner with the Denver Art Museum with our imports from Bhutan,” said Casey Hartnett, founder of CHOKI.” “The care that goes into crafting each scarf reflects centuries of development that is not just a job for the women who bring us these beautiful artworks but a lifestyle. Our mission is to help them continue to do what they do and keep not only the craft alive but their culture founded in the spirit of happiness.” Hartnett’s nonprofit is raising awareness of the Kingdom of Bhutan, an Asian country that does not measure its success by a percentage of economic growth, but rather by their commitment of keeping all citizens happy. The Bhutanese government bases its success on a percentage of “Gross National Happiness” and inner development. “Bhutan currently exports renewable energy but has so much export potential in art and textiles, things of beauty to teach us about values and the beauty of living simply,” said Hartnett. “Bhutanese culture has something basic but important to share with the US through their art.” Bhutan’s weaving community has developed one of the most advanced and sophisticated weaving cultures in the history of civilization. By utilizing Bhutanese back strap looms, the culture of textiles have been integral to Bhutan’s heritage for centuries. Its quality of intricate brocades and complex patterns are among the best in the world. The Bhutanese textiles are the highest form of traditional art and spiritual expression from a culture of scenic monasteries and ever-smiling people. *Additional Colorado retailers that feature CHOKI scarves include: Natural Grocers, in Durango, Steamboat Springs, Fort Collins and most recent, Vitamin Cottage in Longmont. About CHOKI Women’s Cooperative Bhutan The mission of CHOKI Women’s Cooperative is to continue the cultural heritage of textile creation, educate people of its traditions, and stimulate the production of traditional based textiles while providing support and assistance to the communities of weavers.
