Poets Green, Stewart to be Featured at KWG Program

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - March 19, 2015 - PRLog -- In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Knoxville Writers' Guild will feature award-winning poets Connie Jordan Green and Art Stewart during its April program.

The event, which will be open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 2 at the Laurel Theater, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Streets (in Fort Sanders). A $2 donation is requested at the door. The building is handicapped accessible. Additional parking is available at Redeemer Church of Knoxville, 1642 Highland Ave.

Stewart, who specializes in "science flavored poetry," will read from his newest book, "From Where We Came."

In addition, "I will talk eclectically about eccentricity and structure as factors that writers of every genre can use to encourage their habits of writing," he said.

Green will read poems from her upcoming collection titled "Household Inventory," which received the Brick Road Poetry Press Award, during the program. She'll also share about the making of the collection.

"The process of assembling a collection from poems written over a number of years is daunting and is, in some sense, similar to putting together a novel from scenes written at random times and places," she said. "Perseverance and 'doggedness' may be the most essential attributes of a writer, especially when creating a longer work, whether poetry, fiction, or nonfiction."

Stewart and Green both have been recognized by the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame. He is a 2013 inductee into the hall of fame, and she has received a Lifetime Achievement Award. She teaches for the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning, and her weekly column for the "Loudon County News Herald" is in its 36th year. Stewart worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as an ecologist and ecotoxicologist before becoming a science education program manager for Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

Books from both poets will be available for purchase at the program. Additional information about KWG can be found at www.KnoxvilleWritersGuild.org. A Facebook event page has been created at www.facebook.com/events/1414672865504182.
