After much consideration, the winner of Blueforest GivesBack is CASA - Community Alternatives for Supportive Abodes. The Blueforest judges had a very difficult time choosing amongst the more than 2 dozen applications it received. “The opportunity to work with an organization like CASA that is working to meet one of the basic human needs resonated with the judges,” said Kathy Hughes Langfield, SVP, Blueforest Studios. “While there were so many other worthy causes we felt that assisting an organization that is able to use a relatively small amount of funds to get homeless people permanent housing would be the best choice for our first video award.” CASA is a Raleigh-based nonprofit housing developer and property manager. Focusing primarily on multi-family rental properties for people living with disabilities and veterans who have experienced homelessness. CASA's housing model ends homelessness for people in great need by offering safe, permanent places to live. CASA manages more than 340 apartments and homes across the Triangle (Wake, Durham and Orange counties) and has 22 more currently under construction. CASA was created in 1992 in Wake County as a response to the growing number of people with mental health issues who were homeless. For its first 20 years, CASA "flew under the radar," building and remodeling properties quietly to avoid NIMBYism. Earned income from affordable rentals and competitive government grants have helped to build a financially sound organization led by the dynamic and respected CEO, Debra King, who has been at the helm for 20 years. In 2013, CASA's Board and staff adopted a strategic plan with a goal to have a more public face and to engage the community in order to grow to serve more families. CASA has worked hard to spread awareness about the permanent supportive housing model. Blueforest Studios is excited for this opportunity to work with CASA in creating a video that will help CASA accomplish their mission. Blueforest Studios and CASA will work together to broaden their impact and raise awareness of the organization. CASA was selected to receive the 1st BlueForest Gives Back award because of its successful track record of assisting often overlooked members of our community, its dynamic leadership, and their plan to further their measurable impact.
