Interested parties can contact Larry via e-mail at; davidsonl1@yahoo.com Ridden the rest? Now ride the Best; “Back of the Dragon” Ask motorcycle enthusiasts where to find that ultimate ride and a high percentage may answer with a road on the Tennessee/North Carolina border known for many curves along a short distance. Yes, that's a good ride but if you want to experience a dragon, stop chasing its tail and climb on its back. A fair comparison is grabbing a meal from a local fast food drive-thru window or going to a fine restaurant with great company and having a wonderful meal complete with wine and dessert. That's the quality experience the Back of the Dragon offers the rider; not only thrilling rides, beautiful scenery and mountain air but the opportunity to wind around the dragon for days. On October 2012 the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Transportation named Route 16 from Tazewell to Marion “Back of the Dragon” a designated motorcycle road, along with official signage, within the state of Virginia. Back of the Dragon, Virginia Rt. 16 is one of the most challenging and technical roads you will ever ride! 32 miles in length with three mountain ranges, Clinch, Brushy and Big Walker, which are part of the Appalachian range. Back of the Dragon runs North and South and the mountain ranges run East and West, thus giving you the roller coaster ride of your life on a motorcycle. Rt.16 was built some time in the late twenties to early thirties. With the equipment of that day, they followed the contours of the mountains, which in turn give you switchbacks, slaloms, S’s and elevation changes of over 3,500ft. Approximately 40% of the road is in National Forest, and has several overlook pull offs. Be sure to bring your camera because the scenery is breath taking. The Back of the Dragon is very sparsely populated with no eighteen-wheelers allowed and a speed limit of 55mph, which in turn makes for a great ride. Beautifully nestled in the Appalachian Mountains, each end of Back of the Dragon is graced by the towns of Tazewell and Marion, VA. Tazewell sets right off highway 19/460 and Marion, right off Interstate 81. Both offer that quaint “small town” atmosphere with a nice variety of eating and lodging for the rider wishing to spend time in the area. Whether you stay a day or a week you will not be disappointed. The longer you visit the area the more you will find to do. Come to camp, stay in a fine hotel or cozy bed and breakfast. There are national parks and historical sites just another great ride away from either town. Back of the Dragon is now in its sixth year with riders from all over the U.S and Canada coming to experience the thrill. There is an event each year in June called The Dragon Roars! This year the event falls on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
