Follow on Google News | Doyle Award for Nonprofit ExcellenceBy: Cameras For Kids Foundation The program is designed to boost teens’ self-esteem and self-confidence while offering a valuable skill set that the children can carry with them through life. CFKF works with teens that have a history of abuse, abandonment or severe neglect causing them to be at risk of emotional and anti-social behaviors. Photography is an effective and therapeutic tool in igniting children’s imaginations and giving them a unique, artistic voice and productive means of self-expression. Founded in 2009, Cameras For Kids has since expanded rapidly, having brought its program to 27 separate facilities across the United States, Canada and Haiti. The CFKF provides the photography equipment and offers a series of classes over an eight-week period. Upon completing the course, the students exhibit their fine art photography in galleries and other public venues. “I attribute much of our popularity and successes to the many talented photographers teaching our program as these volunteers truly want to share their passion of photography with a less fortunate child,” said Betsey Chesler, founder and CEO of Cameras For Kids Foundation. “Photography is universal. Regardless of what language a child speaks or which city they live in, I consistently see such wonderful transformations in each group of kids during the eight-week sessions.” The CFKF board of directors consists of eight members who share in the mission to help better the lives of underprivileged children. The board’s role is to establish partnerships with corporations and community members as well as to support the foundation’s many events, including gallery exhibits and fundraisers.
