West Sound Academy Students Awarded Rotary Service Grant for Listen to Your Art Music Festival

POULSBO, Wash. - May 5, 2015 - PRLog -- The Rotary Club of Poulsbo-North Kitsap has awarded a community service project grant of $500 to a group of West Sound Academy (WSA) students.  The teens are organizing Listen to Your Art, a music and arts festival planned for August 22 in Port Gamble.  In the application for the grant, the students stated their goal as being "to raise both money and awareness for The Trevor Project - a national, judgment-free youth suicide hotline."

The award presentation was made on May 2 at Poulsbo's Muriel Iverson Williams Waterfront Park at a Rotary event celebrating the decades of community service of longtime Kitsap residents Ardis Morrow and Bill Austin. Rotary Club President Rob Gelder gave the check to the three juniors representing the group of fifteen WSA students, 8th through 12th grade, involved in planning the project:  Ben Taylor and Aidan Moore of Poulsbo, and Megan Hall of Bremerton.

Taylor is chair of the Listen to Your Art committee, and spoke briefly at the presentation, thanking Rotary for the grant and inviting everyone in the audience to attend.  "We want people to come and enjoy the art and music, and leave with a better understanding of The Trevor Project and youth suicide.  We hope to overcome the taboo that is assigned to the topic of suicide and create a safe and open community that is willing to discuss the issue."
