The Runnymede-on-thames Marks Magna Carta Anniversary With New Freedom Break

The Magna Carta Freedom Break is ideal for couples and groups wishing to travel together to visit the place that King John laid his seal on the Magna Carta in 1215, laying the foundations for modern democracy and the protection of freedom around the world. Over a deeply comfortable two night stay, discover more about this remarkable moment in history whilst also enjoying a relaxed weekend by the river, with plenty of time to wander through the Runnymede Meadows and visit the Magna Carta Memorial.

Back at the hotel, there will be the chance to enjoy great food in the runnymede’s two riverside restaurants, disappear into the spa, drift in the outdoor pool and savour the riverside setting of the hotel. There is plenty for everyone to do, from boat trips along the river to Windsor and Eton, to picnics on the banks of the Thames. Guests can also visit the Runnymede Surrey Magna Carta 800th Anniversary Garden, fresh from winning a bronze medal at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show and now flourishing in its new permanent home at the hotel.

There is also the option to book a Blue Badge Guide, whose in-depth knowledge will bring the revolutionary story of the Magna Carta to life. Guests can learn how the Magna Carta limited the powers of England’s monarchy and allowed ‘free men’ the right to a fair trial.  The tour will shed light on one of the most celebrated documents in history, revealing how the charter shaped Britain’s political system and inspired many other constitutions including the US Bill of Rights (1791) and the European Convention on Human Rights (1950).  Although most of the clauses have now been replaced, the Magna Carta remains a cornerstone of the British constitution.
