Follow on Google News | Katja Toivola is bringing New Orleans to Savitaipale, FinlandNew Orleans trombonist and ethnomusicologist is premiering her photo exhibit "All That Jazz!" at Savitaipale Soi Festival this June.
All of the exhibit's pictures have been taken in New Orleans, Louisiana. The city, known as the cradle of jazz, is full of European, Caribbean, and African influence and is, due to its rich history, one of the most interesting and cultured cities in the United States. The pictures are a play of light and shadow, rays of sunshine, the surrealistic atmosphere of the carnival season, fairytale like sceneries, historical buildings, the warm ambience of jazz concerts, timeless traditions and rituals, and the blazing colors of the Mardi Gras Indians. Katja Toivola visited New Orleans for the first time in 1995. Nowadays, she lives in the city permanently and makes a living playing jazz on her own and together with her husband, trumpeter Leroy Jones. Toivola's longtime passion is photography, and her pictures combine in a distinctive way New Orleans' ever pulsating rhythm and the poetic beauty of the birthplace of jazz. Katja Toivola hails from Helsinki, but her family are long-term summer residents of Taipalsaari's Mielakansaari since decades. Savitaipale Soi Festival is focused on high quality music from jazz to blues for the whole family. The festival has traditionally also offered visual art exhibits connected to music. All That Jazz!
