Anil Ambani sets foot in the defence sector…like a boss!

NEW DELHI - June 22, 2015 - PRLog -- After successfully acquiring the Pipavav shipyard which is India's largest shipbuilding and Heavy industry company headquartered in Mumbai, Anil Ambani has now directed his focus towards creating a cluster of companies and applied for at least 13 licences to design, develop and manufacture military equipment ranging from UAVs and spacecraft to submarine systems.

Under his directorship, Reliance Defence Limited has established 11 companies which will be focussed entirely on defence, targeting a potential market of around Rs. 10,000 Crore. The proposed business plan of Reliance Defence Limited is based on the understanding that the requirement of military hardware in India in the following decade would exceed $250 billion. The company is also eyeing the lucrative maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business for both aircraft and naval vessels. While the firm has already sought permission to manufacture spacecraft and satellites; they are also awaiting permit to develop and produce military systems, by the end of this year.

Executives state that these flagship companies would be used as joint venture partnered with foreign manufacturers looking at the 'Make in India' initiative or for licence production of equipment. It is also looking to export defence products from India.

Soliciting several defence contracts, including a $2 billion order for landing platform docks (LPDs) which is nearing finalisation and two helicopter manufacturing projects worth over $3 billion that are in the initial stages, Anil Ambani himself is managing and driving all the defence meetings and has met all major defence manufacturers from around the world . The Company has also been on a hiring spree, picking up executives for its head office in Delhi as well as preparing the formal takeover of the Pipavav Shipyard.

With a keen interest in entering the core markets of land systems, unmanned aviation, defence electronics, submarine construction, production of missiles and development of engines for all platforms, Rajesh Dhingra, President, Reliance Defence &Aerospace Pvt Ltd believes, "The group will aim at a leadership position in the sector and is committed to deliver on time and give the best value proposition." Further he adds, “The response from global OEMs has been exceptional and commitments received have the potential of transforming Indian defence industry in the next ten years."
