Athens Transit was founded in 1976 and currently operates a fleet of 31 buses covering 19 routes throughout the city of Athens. The average monthly ridership for Athens Transit is 145,000 with about 60% of those riders being University of Georgia students. In 2014, the Athens-Clarke County metro area placed fourth for the most-used transit system per capita, right behind the New York City, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. areas.
