Follow on Google News | 16 Teams to Battle in the Inaugural Summer Knock-Out Dance Competition on July 24thBy: International Summer Night Market Hundreds of talented young dancers will hit the stage to compete tournament style over three elimination rounds starting at 7:00pm on Friday, July 24th. The eight winning teams then secure a spot in Round 2 on Friday August 28th, which also features Wild Card positions, giving the eliminated teams a chance to regain a spot in the tourney. Round 2 winners get down for the final battle on Sunday, September 27th at the ISNM centre stage. “As the first choreography dance competition to be held in a tournament format, the Summer Knock-Out at the International Summer Night Market offers teams a new arena to compete,” stated Roberta Bierman of A3 District, an urban arts and dance organization. “The top prize package worth $5,000 will help bring together the top teams from all over the region to the tournament, giving dancers a fantastic venue to showcase their talent.” The SKO’s esteemed panel of judges will change from each round. Round 1’s three judges include: · Jon “JB” Bongato, a passionate performer from Vancouver, B.C., known for his intricate musicality and textured style of movement. Currently, JB is a co-director of TwoFourSeven dance company and a member of The Faculty, two of Vancouver’s top award winning crews. · Liz Vaesen, a professional dancer, choreographer, teacher and adjudicator with over 20 years of experience. Liz has taught at Harbour Dance Centre for over 10 years and was recently a judge for HHI Western Canada. · Julio Fuentes, an award-winning choreographer and dance instructor based in Vancouver, B.C. His credits include Fashion Rocks Canada, America’s Best Dance Crew Canadian Tour, Two From Galilee, adjudicating for the International Dance Challenge, Dance Olympus, and many others. Judging criteria will be based on choreography, execution, technique and performance. The first round will be emceed by AJ “MegaMan” Kambere, who was mentored and taught by choreographer Megan Jones in hip hop. Some of MegaMan’s choreography in hip hop and popping has placed top 3 in many dance competitions such as: Core (1st place); the Nanaimo Festival (2st place); the Cowichan Festival (1st place); and, the North Island Festival (3rd place).
