AWSCPA Names McGladrey's Jan Phipps Woman CPA of the Year

CHICAGO - July 27, 2015 - PRLog -- The American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA) has announced that the Society has presented its Woman CPA of the Year Award to Jan I. Phipps, CPA, Houston tax practice leader for McGladrey LLP, the nation’s leading provider of assurance, tax and consulting services focused on the middle market. The award was presented at a national awards dinner in Houston on July 23, 2015. The Woman CPA of the Year Award has been given by the AWSCPA since 1994 in recognition of outstanding contributions to the CPA profession.

Prior to joining McGladrey, Phipps was a part of a team that started a niche firm, which became Margolis, Phipps & Wright (MP&W), focusing on delivering tax services and consulting to high net worth families and closely held businesses. Phipps focused on delivering exceptional service to the firm’s clients and building the firm to support those services. In 2013, MP&W became the Houston office of McGladrey.

In her role as a leader of MP&W and now at McGladrey, Phipps has devoted her career to mentoring other women by serving as a role model, creating alternative schedules and career paths, fearlessly defending the unique needs of women in the workplace and encouraging her male partners to appreciate and reward contributions of females in the firm.

“I am particularly gratified to have made a difference in the career paths of the women in our firm, and delighted to see that a lot of the practices that were novel at the time we implemented them have become de rigueur,” said Phipps. “At McGladrey, we have been able to prove that providing alternative paths makes good business sense and we’ve been able to keep great women in the workforce and in the firm.”

Phipps openly shares her path to success in her profession, including her determination to shake the restraints of her childhood in East Texas through hard work and dedication in hopes of inspiring others to know that they, too, can reach their goals if they are determined and willing to put forth sufficient effort. Phipps is a great believer in accepting personal responsibility and of the need to pay it forward so that others can benefit from her experiences and efforts.

Phipps has served in leadership roles in various professional organizations within her specialty and on nonprofit boards. She has made presentations to numerous organizations related to leadership and women in the professional environment, including the AWSCPA National Convention.
