Mobile Update Me adds major ADA enhancement to its emergency notification program

New feature ensures access for people with visual and mobility disabilities

Albuquerque, New Mexico – At the end of July, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) celebrated its 25^th anniversary. For the 43 million Americans with disabilities, the last quarter century has featured a substantially improved way of life compared to any time in history.

But, despite the improvements in access that have improved the lives of people with disabilities, according to the Centers for Disease Control, “…emergencies such as fires, floods and acts of terrorism [still] present a real challenge.”

Jim Britt, founder and CEO of Mobile Update Me (http://www.mobileupdate.me/), offers hope to people with disabilities with a major enhancement of his existing mobile emergency and disaster notification program for communities app.

“This enhancement is designed for people with visual and mobility disabilities,” says Britt. “Prior to the enhancement, Mobile Update Me notified users through a sound and flashing LED light of the need to tap our smartphone or mobile device app in order to read an emergency message. Now, using Text To Speech (TTS) technology, the complete message is spoken out loud immediately after the alert notification is sounded and the light flashes.”

The enhancement is also valuable to people while they’re driving. According to the most recent federal government statistics, more than 3,000 people were killed and 424,000 people were injured in distracted driving accidents in 2013.

“I considered some very real challenges when developing this Mobile Update Me enhancement,” Britt says. “Now, in addition to helping people with visual and mobility disabilities, drivers can hear the alert immediately without having to take their eyes off the road.”

The Mobile Update Me app is compatible with Apple and Android smartphones and devices like tablets and watches.
