“The Dying Embers of a True Brit” by Harry Eicke is published

This is a story of a man that has lived in a small village all his life with his parents. All are strong church people and abide by the laws in a militant way. There is no leeway. He finally realises his lifelong dream of becoming a seaman, but his dreams are shattered by people that are completely opposite to his way of life. He is an absolute misfit and disliked by all the crew. It’s a story of drug smuggling by the small fry of seamen for those protected at the top of the ladder, and if something goes wrong it’s always the carriers who pay the price. But for all this, our protagonist, who gets into gunfights and murder, still holds his basic upbringing and becomes a hero.

Standing in the kop end of Liverpool football ground, the part that held the bulk of the forty odd thousand singing fans, their arms pinned tight and hardly able to breathe, Graeme had a panoramic view from behind a small wall over one of the entrances. He felt a kind of euphoria with the singing and chanting that was almost deafening. Never in his life had he been in a mass of swaying bodies urged on by emotion. It was absolutely mind boggling, and when Gummy pointed out three Scotsmen that were playing for Liverpool and he heard the chants of their names, it had him reeling with patriotism and excitement. All the thoughts of drugs, the Mala, and the peddlers were blown away in a gale force sweep. All he could see was thousands of white blobbed faces that brought a feeling upwards from the pit of his stomach drawing him in to its close cauldron of heat, bathing him in a mass of red and white flags and scarves that rippled through an unseen primitive force.
